Top Indian auto companies (Mahindra, BMW, Mercedes and Maruti) working on lighter, faster and more efficient cars

Major auto companies such as M&M, BMW, Mercedes and Maruti are working on bringing out more efficient and faster and lighter cars as per customers demands. Cars which weighed around 750 kgs in the 70s are now at 1500 kgs.

Though present range of cars are more efficient and stronger, they are also double the average weight resulting in need of more power and more fuel.  Considering sky rocketing petrol prices it is of utmost importance to bring down the weight of cars so that they not only become more efficient but consume moderate amounts of fuel as well resulting in less emission and air pollution.

Mahindra and Mahindra wants to bring out an SUV weighing less than a ton while Maruti Suzuki too is offering cash incentives for every gram of weight reduced.  The focus and demand is now on lighter and more fuel efficient cars and manufacturers are using carbon fiber reinforced plastic instead of steel to bring down weight and yet retain strength of the car.
