The fully stretched Ford Figo sedan was spotted alongside hatchback and sub-4 metre compact sedan models wearing similar camouflage. The sighting comes as a surprise as the over-4 metre sedan, 4,254 mm to be precise, will not launch in India, given the peculiar tax relaxation for sub-4 metre cars in the country.
India is the only market for which sub-4 metre versions of original-size cars, essentially sedans, are designed. Some cars are designed under 4-metres length right from scratch if they are intended for India. And since only one version is made, the same is exported to markets in South-East Asia and Middle-East.
But in case of next generation Ford Figo, it seems the company is planning to export full-size sedan to certain markets like Algeria, Morocco, Romania and South Africa if not all, from India. New Ford Figo sedan and hatchback will be produced at the company’s new plant in Sanand, Gujarat. India will witness the launch of compact sedan variant first in mid-2015 and then the hatchback at a later part of the year, believed to be July and September respectively.
The new Figo twins for India, will be offered in a range of petrol and diesel engine options. Petrol is expected to be in the form of a 1.2l 4 cylinder, which is the same as seen on existing Figo hatch, but with a little re-work. This will enable the engine to produce more power (currently it produces 71 PS), at the same time keeping the fuel efficiency intact. Diesel is expected to be in the form of a 1.5l Duratorq, which is currently fitted on to the new Fiesta. But again, this will be reworked towards fuel efficiency. In current Fiesta it offers 91 PS.
Once launched, Figo hatchback will take on thee likes of Maruti Swift and Hyundai Grand i10, while the sedan version will compete with the likes of Maruti Swift DZire, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, and Honda Amaze. Price for the hatchback is expected to be in the range of Rs 4.5 – 7 lakhs, while that of sedan will be in the range of Rs 5-8 lakhs.
