Honda India new small car and SUV launch is not very far

Breaking away from their traditional niche or premium segment, Honda India now aims at the mass market with the launch of two new cars in the entry level hatchback and SUV segment. On cards are sub Brio sized hatchback and a Ford EcoSport competitor, launch of which are not very far as development has already commenced.

With their new sub Rs 4 lakh hatchback, Honda aims to take on rivals like Maruti Alto, Datsun Go, Hyundai i10, etc. Speaking about the new SUV, this will be aimed at a launch price of sub Rs 6 lakhs, so as to compete with Ford EcoSport and upcoming Maruti XA Alpha.

As far as placement of these two new cars in their current line-up is concerned, the hatchabck will go at the start, below the Brio, while the SUV will go above Amaze, but below Mobilio. Just like Brio, Amaze and Mobilio, this new hatchaback and SUV too are based on Honda’s advanced GSP platform.

Honda Motors has confirmed that all development work on these two upcoming cars will be carried out in India so as to take maintain prices at affordable levels. With developments well on their way, the actual launch of the two upcoming models is expected in the not too distant future though no exact time span was revealed.

Besides these two models being planned, Honda Motors India also has extensive plans where expansion of R&D facilities and augmentation of dealer networks are concerned. Honda plans to expand networks from a presence in 107 cities as on date, to 150 cities by March 2015, while though still unconfirmed, a third plant in Gujarat is in the offing. Honda also targets increased capacities to 2.4 lakh units from a current 1.8 lakh units per annum. They aim to produce 3 lakh cars in India by 2017.
