Out of 32 probable candidates for 2013 Car of the Year awards, final 8 have been shortlisted. These include the Ford B-Max, Hyundai i30, Mercedes Benz A Class, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GT86, Volkswagen Golf and Volvo V40.
To be eligible for Car of the Year awards, the new vehicles should be either available now or before the end of the year in five or more European markets with each have at least 5,000 yearly sales. The voting process is in two stages with first shortlist announced in mid December 2012. The second round will find a single winner which will be announced at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show to be held on March 4, 2013.
The shortlist which this year includes 8 car names, usually consists of 7 models but due to the fact that Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT8 have tied at No.6 position the list contains 8 names this year for the prestigious award. The jury consists of 58 journalists from 22 European countries. Countries such as France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain have six members each while the rest of the jury is equally divided. The members of the jury have 25 points to assign to top 5 cars with not more than 10 points for a single model.
