New Suzuki Jimny (Maruti Gypsy) to be made in India?

Suzuki Jimny 4x4 SUV gets revamped (5)

Suzuki’s wholly owned Gujarat car plant is likely to be the production hub for the next gen Jimny.

Though the Suzuki Jimny nameplate has spawned only three generations so far since 1970, the continuing demand for the product says a lot about its relevance in the market. The niche, pocket-sized off-roader has a huge fan following throughout the globe. We know it as the Maruti Gypsy (second gen) which still is the Indian Army’s favorite UV.

The third gen Jimny has been on sale in international markets since 1998. Thanks to the undying demand, European dealers have been pressurizing Suzuki to come up with a next-gen model without tampering its honest attitude.

The petite 4×4 is known for its off-roading prowess.

NDTV Car & Bike reports that, according to its sources, Suzuki is developing the fourth generation of the Jimny. It will be based on the same platform as the Baleno and Ignis. The chances of India being the global production hub of the upcoming Jimny are very bright as the platform is already heavily localized here for global production.

If Suzuki manufactures the next gen Jimny here for markets like Southeast Asia, Europe and even Brazil, it may as well sell it in the domestic market. The 1.0-litre BoosterJet with Ignis’s AllGrip AWD system seems to be the primary runner gear choice but one can’t rule out the bigger 1.4-litre Boosterjet either.

If at all the new mini SUV goes on sales in India, it’s most likely to adopt the Gypsy monicker to take advantage of the brand pull the name has among enthusiasts.
