BMW revealed their new MINI Cooper alongside the new Volkswagen Beetle at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Show earlier this year. Both these vehicles compete for a fair share of attention in the auto sector and selection between the two is a rather tricky affair. However, in India there’s an outright winner in the MINI.
Where exterior features are concerned, MINI Cooper and VW Beetle are eye catching. While the former has straight lines and a curved front fascia the latter has more of a rounded finish along with innovative lighting features. Interiors of MINI Cooper are seen done up in dual tones with premium leather upholstery. LED waterfall lighting, cruise control and audio controls also form part of the interior makeup. The Beetle is more spacious in its interior design though it is also done up in premium leather with a number of leather and wooden trims along with a leather encased steering wheel.
Where engine specifications and performance of these two rivaling hatchbacks is concerned. MINI Cooper has a 1.6 liter engine offering 98 bhp where the base model is concerned while this extends to 184 bhp for the S Variant. Diesel engined models are fitted with 1.6 liter engines with power from 90 bhp to 143 bhp. Beetle is fitted with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder in line petrol engine offering 114.4 bhp at 5400 rpm and peak torque of 172 Nm at 3200 rpm. Mileage of VW Beetle is a striking factor at 8 to 9 kmpl in city limits and extending to 13 to 14 kmpl on the highway, far in excess of the MINI which stands at 6 – 7 kmpl.
Mercedes Benz B Class is available in 2 variants, the B180 and B180 Sport. Both are powered by a 1.6L petrol engine that generates 122 bhp and 200 Nm torque and reaches top speed of 190 kmph. Launch price of Mercedes Benz B Class B180 last year was Rs 21.49 lakhs while that of B180 Sport is 24.87 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom, Mumbai. The B-Class will have a diesel engine later in 2013. The B-Class competes with the Mini, VW Beetle in the luxury small car segment.
