Though Volkswagen is at a leadership position in Europe, the company is yet to make its mark in India. The company has chalked out a new plan, which will help them move forward in India.

At the launch of new Vento sedan yesterday, the company has announced the launch of five new products in India over the next 24 months. These include a sub four meter compact sedan, relaunch of the Beetle, new generation Passat sedan and yet to be unveiled 2016 Tiguan SUV – (Tiguan is set for a global launch next year).
Current Sales figures of Volkswagen in India
As per data received from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Volkswagen India sold 45,012 units in 2014-15 as against 52,525 units in the previous fiscal; leading to a dip in sales by 14.3 percent. This was despite the fact that overall car sales in India increased 4.99 percent from 17,86,826 units in the previous fiscal to 18,76,017 units in FY15.
The period April-May 2015 however saw a significant revival in sales of Volkswagen India. Sales during the period stood at 7,739 units as compared to 5,687 units in the same period in the previous year, recording growth of 36.08 percent. In April 2015, the company also announced increased investment for localization of products so as to bring in greater cost efficiency. Production capacities at the company’s two plants in Chakan and Aurangabad are also set for enhancement so as to gear up for production of these upcoming products.
Below are the four new cars on which VW India has plans to expand their customer base.
Volkswagen India Compact Sedan (ICS)
In looks, the new Volkswagen compact sedan will be inspired by the Polo / Vento; which are currently on sale.
Spied on test, ICS (codename) is going to be the most exciting product of the four. It will mark the arrival of Volkswagen into the sub 4m compact sedan segment. To be priced in the range of Rs 5-8 lakhs, this car will compete with the likes of Maruti Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, Hyundai Xcent and upcoming Ford Figo Aspire.
Expected launch – Diwali 2016
Expected Price Range – Rs 5-8 lakhs
The new Beetle Pink Edition.
First launched in 2009, this iconic Volkswagen car was discontinued from the Indian auto market in 2013; owing to low sales. But, with the market for premium hatchbacks on the rise, Volkswagen India now plans to re-launch the Beetle in India. Once launched, it will compete with the likes of Mercedes A Class, B Class, BMW 1 Series, Volvo V40 and the upcoming Fiat 500.
Expected launch – Q4 2015 / Q1 2016
Expected Price Range – Rs 20-25 lakhs
The new Volkswagen Passat
Winner of the prestigious 2015 World Car of the Year award, eighth generation Passat is a completely new car. It is based on the acclaimed MQB platform from Volkswagen. Lighter, sportier, and more efficient than the older Passat; in India it will compete with the likes of Toyota Camry and upcoming new gen Skoda Superb.
Expected Launch – H1 2016
Expected Price Range – Rs 22-26 lakhs
The new gen Tiguan could be inspired from the Cross Coupe GTE, which was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year.
The compact SUV from Volkswagen, 2017 Tiguan is currently in the test phase. Expected to be unveiled later this year, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, it will be first launched in Europe. To be based on VW’s MQB platform, this car will be VW India’s answer to the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Trailblazer.
