BMW i8, the most-advanced plug-in hybrid sportscar from the Bavarian car maker, is all set to be unveiled in India, at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo this February. Launched in Europe and the United States last year, i8 is not expected to be launched in India this year. This is because it has been sold out for first year’s production run.
India launch of i8 might take place next year. In the US, the BMW i8 is sold at a starting price of about $136k (about Rs 85 lakh). Considering the taxes, the car might be launched in India for a price of about Rs 1.5 crores.
BMW i8 is one of the most fuel efficient car, with a mileage of 40 kmpl on hybrid mode. It is powered by a three cylinder 1.5l engine, which delivers 228 hp power and 320 Nm torque to the rear wheels. In addition to this, there is a synchronous electric motor as well. This adds 129 hp and 250 Nm torque to the front wheels.Power transmission from the petrol engine is taken care by a 6 speed manual gearbox, while that of the electric motor is handled by two stage automatic gearbox.
In total, the BMW i8 delivers 357 hp and 570 Nm torque. It can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kmph (limited).
