BMW India launched the new 7 Series last month for a starting price of Rs 92.90 lakhs. Today, they rolled out the first locally produced 7 Series.
Available in both diesel and petrol engine options, the new 7 Series is offered in a choice of 4 variants, 730Ld, 740Li, 750Li, and 760Li. These are priced at Rs 92.90 lakhs, Rs 1.12 crores, Rs 1.29 crores, and Rs 1.73 crores respectively (ex-showroom). The one to be locally produced, is 730Ld, while others will be imported as CBUs (completely built units). Apart from the new 7 Series, BMW India has also begun local production of MINI Countryman from the same plant this month.
Luxury car manufacturers in India are focusing on increasing the number of models which are offered as locally produced. This helps them to reduce the price of their products substantially as compared to the cars sold as CBUs and offer a competitive price. Luxury car market in India is expected to double in size by 2015 to 50,000 units. As the demand increases, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz and Jaguar Land Rover are getting ready to sell more cars that are locally produced.
