Ford India domestic Dec 2013 sales decline despite EcoSport being overbooked

Ever since Ford India introduced the EcoSport compact SUV, their sales chart have reported growth, month after month. But, the streak broke in December 2013, when they registered a 10% decline in domestic sales.

What is even more surprising is the fact that their best seller, EcoSport is overbooked to the extent that the manufacturer has closed bookings after waiting periods reached up to 1 year in some cases. Domestic sales were at 5871 units, as against 6517 units sold in Dec 2012.

At the same time, when their sales in India are declining, their exports are growing. Speaking about their growth in export, Ford says, “Ford solidifies India’s position as a significant export hub; Exports in December were at 5338 units as compared to 4382 units a year earlier.”

Speaking about their performance in 2013, Vinay Piparsania, executive director of Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford India says, “Despite difficult economic and business environment, 2013 has been a remarkable and rewarding year for Ford in India. With several months of sustained sales performances and Ford EcoSport recognized with major awards in its debut year, we are excited to conclude the year with our products finding greater acceptance from customers and media.”

On stopping bookings for EcoSport, Ford stated, “While we did anticipate that the Ford EcoSport would generate great demand, it is gratifying to see an overwhelming response and continued strong demand of our compact urban SUV. As we are witnessing an extended waiting period on certain variants, mostly petrol, we have temporarily stopped taking bookings on those specific variants.”
