This probably means that the current 1.6 litre DOHC TDI engine in Skoda Rapid will be scraped. It produces 105 PS max. power @ 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm peak torque between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. Specifications of new Rapid 1.5 litre diesel engine are unknown at this point.
This engine and drivetrain change should make Skoda Rapid more fuel efficient. More importantly, introduction of DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) also known as DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) in Rapid could make it more fun to drive. Its identical cousin Volkswagen Vento already comes with DSG options.
The engine change may not be limited to diesel version only. Smaller petrol engine with 1.2 litre displacement may also feature in Rapid, as Volkswagen Vento is already rolling out with the same. Presently, Rapid is available with automatic transmission in petrol version with a 6-speed torque converter. New Rapid will also be having 5-speed manual transmission in both petrol and diesel variants.
This upgrade could make Skoda Rapid more competitive in mid-size sedan segment as it is not performing in market so great, despite being Skoda’s bestseller. Hence, this revamp could bring down the cost of Rapid, as smaller engine could benefit from tax cuts.
