Tata Motors AMT across all cars, starting with Bolt, Zest and Nano

Tata Motors has revealed that they will install AMT – automated manual transmission across all their cars in the near future. The first cars to see the AMT will be Nano, Zest sedan and Bolt hatchback.

AMT gearbox has been loved by car buyers in India and seems like the near future will see new cars getting launched in both transmission options, manual and AMT, along with automatic. At the 2014 Auto Expo, Tata Motors also showcased a cutaway version of Tata Nano Twist featuring F-Tronic five speed AMT gearbox.

Tata Nano's AMT on display at 2014 Delhi Auto ExpoAMT Unit fitted in F Tronic range is being developed by Magneti Marelli, the famous Italian company who are also supplying this transmission for Formula 1 race cars. AMT is basically a manual transmission with automatic clutch thus allowing the vehicle better performance on city roads. AMT gearbox fitted on board the Nano is a five speed gearbox.

With AMT, drivers can opt for fully automatic mode or a manual mode. The Transmission Control Unit works in sync with the gears and when coupled with hydraulic actuators, the unit delivers 10-15% more fuel efficiency than any regular automatic transmission unit.

Tata Nano Twist F Tronic seen at the 2014 Auto Expo fitted with AMT gearbox will be the cheapest automatic car once it goes on sale. It will sport a redesigned bumper, black accents on headlights and though the company has not announced official launch dates, it could be launched by end of 2014, just ahead of the festive season in India.
