Hyundai saw an increase of 41% in sales of Elantra during 2011. Hyundai Elantra sedan also won the North American Car of the Year at Detroit Motor Show earlier this year. This is the second time that Hyundai has claimed this honor. It was announced that this new model will be soon available in dealer showrooms.

However, production constraints are hampering growth of Elantra, as was earlier expected. The company plant at Montgomery, Alabama is working at 110% capacity. Here, both Elantra and Sonata are produced and last year the plant rolled out 338,000 units while Hyundai sold 186,000 Elantra in the US during the year.

While demand is building up, the company posted a 20% increase in sales during 2011 in the United States. With such increased demand, high expectations and customers eagerly awaiting supply of Elantra it is hoped that the company will either boost production or at least announce plans of setting up a new assembly plant in North America to deal with this shortage.
