While John Travolta's vintage 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL convertible couldn't be recovered as an operational car, what can act as solace is the $50,000 that the thief will have to pay the actor in restitution. Last September, Travolta had parked the convertible on a Santa Monica street for a few minutes while stepping into a Jaguar dealership. When he returned, the car had been stolen, and obviously the keys were with him.
Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis clarified that the vintage 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL convertible was dismantled when found. Recovered car parts include hubcaps, the speedometer, seats, and others.
Of the two men arrested, D L Rayford Jr., 52, pleaded no contest to grand theft auto and will serve a 16 month jail term. Michael T. Green has pleaded not guilty. The arrest of the two, helped police put an end to eight stolen car cases. There has been no comment from Travolta's publicist yet regarding the judgment.
