Showcased in Delhi Auto Expo 2014, the GLA compact SUV will compete with Audi Q3 and BMW X1 SUVs, with one petrol and one diesel engine option. The GLA CDI coming to India via CBU route, may receive a 220 CDI engine with 2143cc displacement that is plonked in the Mercedes A Class. Maximum power of 220 CDI engine however is up tuned to 168 hp against 107 bhp in the A class. Mated to a 7 speed dual clutch semi automatic transmission with manual shift mode, the GLA sprints from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.3 sec, and goes up to 215 kmph. Launch of Mercedes GLA is expected in September, booking can be done at a fee of Rs. 1 lakh.
The new S class variant on the other hand, gets a 3.0 litre V6 turbo engine that generates 258 bhp max. power at 3,600 rpm and 620 Nm peak torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. Coupled to a 7 speed auto transmission, the rear wheel drive limousine sprints from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.8 seconds and goes up to 249 kmph.
Mercedes S 350 CDI will come in as CKD and will be assembled locally with a slew of features, but not as much as the elder S 500. Some of the features that S 500 will not share with its lower variant will be individual seats and the centre arm rest mounted tables at the rear, cooling and heating cup holders, 360 degree reversing camera, and night vision kit.
Competing against Audi A8 L and Jaguar XJ, the Merc S 350 CDI bookings can be made for an advance payment of Rs 5 lakhs. Launch is expected to take place in late June or early July 2014.
