Diesel compare – Tata Zest vs Maruti Dzire vs Hyundai Xcent vs Honda Amaze

Sub-4 metre compact sedan space is hugely welcomed and preferred by large variety of car buyers, mostly because of practicality at price point. Compact Sedan segment which was inaugurated by Tata Motors with Indigo CS, soon saw increasing competition and Tata’s offering was submerged.

Zest vs Amaze Xcent Dzire dieselTo reclaim lost grounds and remind the company’s presence in market, Tata Zest will be launched soon, in about 3 weeks, initiating a battle with Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Xcent and Honda Amaze. As technical specifications of Zest is released, let us see how the new compact sedan from Tata performs in comparison with segment rivals (diesel).

Tata uses same acclaimed 1.3 litre Fiat diesel engine, which is also shared by Maruti Swift Dzire but both are tuned differently. Honda Amaze gets bulkiest of motors in the match, 1.5 litre i-DTEC, that is shared with bigger brother Honda City. Hyundai Xcent comes with puniest power plant, 1.1 litre U2.

Tata Zest-034 rainWhile rest of rivals come only with 5 speed manual gearbox, Tata Zest stands out by not only offering automatic transmission as first in segment, but also increasingly popular AMT, making Zest second car in country to equip the setup.

Zest manages to stay close to Amaze’s performance figures, former reads 90 PS @ 4000 rpm while latter leads with 100 PS @ 3600 rpm. Third, behind Zest is Swift with 75 PS @ 4000 rpm max. power and last is Hyundai Xcent with 72 PS @ 4000 rpm.

Tata Zest-027 bootConsidering peak torque, Tata Zest has a marginal edge over Amaze. Though both sedans record 200 Nm, engine in Zest keeps at it for longer time, i.e., from 1750 rpm till 3000 rpm. Whereas i-DTEC in Amaze reaches max. torque only at around 1750 rpm, then gradually dips.

Mileage of diesel compact sedans is vital consideration as the segment is as popular as entry level hatchbacks in India. As per ARAI certified mileage, Honda Amaze is not only best in segment, but is also second most fuel efficient car in India. Amaze returns 25.8 kmpl. Second best in segment and India’s 10th most FE car is Hyundai Xcent, with 24.4 kmpl. Next in line is Maruti Swift Dzire giving 23.4 kmpl.

Amaze helps Honda sell more cars than Tata Motors in IndiaNext aspect of interest would be boot space, as compact sedan costs right in between premium hatchback and mid-size sedan, and isolated boot would be one of key reasons for choosing CS segment. Hyundai Xcent offers 407 litres volume, marginally beating Honda Amaze which lets you fill 400 litres. Tata Zest manages to stay comparable with top cars with 390 litres of boot volume. Maruti Dzire ranks lowest with only 316 litres.

hyundai xcent sedan studio shots (2)Last is price; most affordable low end and top spec compact sedan is Maruti Dzire, priced between Rs 5.80 lakh – Rs 7.09 lakh (introductory price, ex-showroom Delhi). Honda Amaze is easily affordable as well but high end model is pricey at Rs. 7.60 lakhs. Hyundai Xcent entry level variant is most expensive, but top of line trim costs less than Amaze. Price of Tata Zest will be announced during launch by first week of August; which is highly likely to be compelling.
