Indian Volkswagen Polo Cup racers head to Colombo Night Races this weekend

If you thought the Volkswagen Polo Cup races put South India in focus, it’s time to go further. The Night Street Race at Colombo, Sri Lanka is scheduled for 17th December, 2011. The support race is part of the inaugural Colombo Night Races, and is scheduled at an opportune moment with the Electric Peacock Festival, Sri Lanka’s first independent international music festival scheduled for 18th December at Negombo.

Of the 11 night race drivers, 7 of the 10 top drivers of the Polo R Cup India 2011 season would be participating. The remainder of the grid will be completed with 4 Sri Lankan guest drivers. Currently the Volkswagen Polo-R Cup is the only manufacturer-backed racing series in India and the scheduled Colombo Night Race marks its international debut.

The support race is a non-championship round that entails racing in a 2km street circuit in downtown Colombo. The night races are being held from 16-18 December, and the Volkswagen Polo Race is amongst 6 such motorsport events that are planned for the weekend. Other races will see cars and motorbikes burn rubber on the specially re-laid track. There will be 2 practice sessions, and qualifiers are scheduled for Friday. The 10 lap Volkswagen Polo Race is planned for Saturday. The 2011 JK Tyre VW Polo-R Cup season recently concluded on 27th November 2011. This sees winner Vishnu Prasad headd to the 2012 Scirocco Cup.

Head of Volkswagen Motorsport India, Mr. Prithviraj Siddappa had this to say. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to race on the streets of Colombo in our first ever night race. This will be very encouraging and a learning experience for our young drivers as this is not a conventional race circuit. They will have to adapt quickly and tweak their racing styles. This exhibition race also means a lot for Volkswagen Motorsport as this proves the popularity of Polo R Cup in India and beyond. Races like these will definitely help us attract more talent for participation in the upcoming season of Polo R Cup.”
